THE PRIME MINISTER
The Right Honourable Prime Minister and Minister of Defence, National Security and Environment
Mr. Samuel Ntsokoane Matekane was born of 15 March, 1958 in Mantšonyane in the district of Thaba Tseka in Lesotho. He is the 10th Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Lesotho inaugurated on 28 October, 2022. His inauguration came as a result of the outcome of the National Assembly Elections for the 11th Parliament of the Kingdom of Lesotho. Where his Revolution for Prosperity (RFP) Political Party emerged victorious.
A business mogul and multimillionaire, Prime Minister. Matekane started a career in politics upon founding the Revolution for Prosperity in March 2022. His new party ushered a new dawn as a new player in Lesotho’s political landscape. Unlike a majority of political formations in Lesotho from traditional parties, the RFP became a new party formed by business people and like-minded players who advocate for change in the dwindling fortunes and political rhetoric of the country. The RFP went on to win 56 seats in the general elections that were held seven months later, in October 2022. The party fell short of the outright majority by five seats. Prime Minister. Matekane heads the RFP government in a seven-member coalition that includes the Alliance of Democrats (AD), Movement for Democratic Change (MEC), Lesotho Congress for Democracy (LCD), Basotho Action Party (BAP), Reformed Congress of Lesotho (RCL) and Hope – Mphatlalatsane political parties.
His leadership acumen and managerial shrewdness were honed for over 30 years in private business. He is a self-taught and acclaimed entrepreneur who has learnt through experience how to navigate and master the terrain of the business realm and built a business empire that is both successful and sustainable, the Matekane Group of Companies (MGC). MCG has since blossomed into a multi-sectoral regional giant. Today, his company dominates in sectors such as civil works, mining, civil aviation. Property development, agriculture and pharmaceuticals.
The Prime Minister’s impeccable business astuteness has earned him global recognition by, among others, being decorated with numerous international awards, including the “Lifetime Achievement Award” at the 2022 African Business Leadership Awards, “Africa’s Top Entrepreneur” at the Forbes Best of Africa Award ceremony in 2021, where he was dubbed “The pride of the nation, beacon of hope and champion of all Basotho.”
An avid philanthropist, Prime Minister Matekane is dedicated to changing the lives of the most disadvantages through his charity works, which include the construction of infrastructure projects such as schools, recreational grounds and support to the farming community.
A product of ‘Mabathoana High School and Member of Parliament for Mantšonyane constituency, Mr. Matekane is married with six children.
